The Hydrix Services, Head of Hardware leads the hardware delivery engineering function. The Head of Hardware is responsible for the Systems, Electronics, Mechanical and Industrial Design teams, delivering world class safety critical highly regulated design solutions that drive success for our customers.

Key objectives include:

  • Drive high performance of the Hardware team.
  • Ensure the appropriate skill level, experience, and capability exists within the Hardware engineering team to satisfy applicable industry standards and client requirements.
  • Ensure the Hardware team skills and knowledge are regularly updated to reflect cutting edge technologies and approaches.
  • Develop and maintain Hardware Engineering processes, methodologies and tools to satisfy industry Standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support the Director of Engineering: Development & Delivery, managing the mix of team capabilities and conducting appropriate recruitment in line with approved business needs.
  • Support sales and business development conversion efforts, including supporting project estimation activities and proposal generation.
  • Provide hands on Hardware Engineering expertise to deliver technical outputs, including architectures, detailed designs, unit tests, etc.

​​​​​Key responsibilities:

  • Provision Hardware engineering capability into projects and programs of work.
  • Develop Hardware engineering work breakdown structure for projects, bids and proposals. Assist in the preparation of quotations, proposals, tender responses and similar documents.
  • Ensure the Hardware engineering team members can identify and document key design and engineering trade-offs that deliver value to the customer and ensure cost-effective efficient delivery and compliance to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure Hardware engineering processes and standard operating procedures are in place, are regularly updated, and comply with evolving industry standards and regulatory requirements to a level appropriate to minimise project risk whilst maximising delivery efficiency.
  • Ensure all Hardware engineering activities are funded as agreed with the Project Manager (PM) and/or Head of Project Delivery.
  • Support delivery teams develop and report metrics on progress of Hardware engineering activities.
  • Develop Hardware/firmware documentation including architectures, design documentation, etc.
  • Deliver technical solutions as part of multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Provide appropriate oversight and conduct of Hardware engineering design and development activities including technical investigations, risk management, requirements analysis, architecture, detailed design, integration, testing and verification tasks.
  • Provide Hardware engineering training and mentoring to other engineers.
  • Conduct lessons learned on Hardware engineering activities.
  • Complete performance appraisals and set goals, objectives and KPIs for the Hardware Engineering team on an as and when needed basis, but minimally annually and at mid-year.
  • Provide metrics and reports on team performance to the Director of Engineering: Development & Delivery


Skills And Experiences

A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering within one of the following disciplines:

  • Hardware Engineering (Majoring either Electronic, Mechanical or Systems Engineering)
  • Masters, Honours degree or double degree with relevant engineering and/or business discipline, highly regarded

Minimum of 15 years’ experience in Hardware team leadership and technical delivery within a Hardware engineering role, including practical experience with embedded hardware platforms and projects, medical device experience is highly regarded.

Track record of:

  • Proficiency consulting and communicating with clients.
  • Experience working in a product design and engineering focused organisation.
  • A can-do attitude, critical thinker, problem solver, champions innovation.
  • Manages and leads well under the pressure of client deadlines and competing resource dynamics.
  • Leading collaborative multi-discipline teams to deliver complex product engineering projects.
  • Leading design reviews, risk assessments, design controls.
